The battery is one of the most important core components of an electric vehicle. Whether facing high temperatures, wading in water or even impact, the safety of protecting the battery cannot be ignored. To protect the battery, the battery casing is a top priority. The battery shell is an essential component of an electric vehicle, housing the high-voltage battery, electronics, sensors and connectors, helping to protect the overall structure and safety of the vehicle, and shielding critical components from potential external impacts, exposure to heat and water ingress. The stiffness of the battery pack housing is of particular importance. In most electric vehicles, the battery pack housing is an important part of the vehicle structure and its performance plays a significant role in the overall stiffness of the body-in-white. This requires that the battery pack shell meets the safety requirements for both front and side impacts. The stiffness of the battery pack housing depends to a large extent on the sandwich construction used, which typically employs aluminium foam as the sandwich layer material. In addition, the high specific stiffness, low weight and good damping characteristics of fibre-reinforced components have a positive impact on the noise, vibration and NVH performance of the vehicle.
The evolution of electric vehicles towards platformisation requires the design and manufacture of different models on a common platform. In order to accommodate this trend towards platformisation, battery housings must have a high degree of design flexibility and modularity. This means that the battery enclosure needs to be able to adapt to different battery pack configurations while being compatible with the dimensional and structural requirements of different vehicle models. Modularity simplifies the manufacturing process, reduces production costs, and improves the ease of servicing and replacing batteries.
